Update Report: Green Award for Inland Navigation

August 2023
Together with inland navigation entrepreneurs, ports, suppliers and service providers, Green Award has been working since 2011 to (re)recognise and promote sustainable and safe inland navigation. We do this on a non-profit basis with a challenging programme of requirements, combined with a system of inspiration, inspection, certification and reward. In July, our inland navigation team provided 24 (re)certifications of various types of vessels. There are also great developments in terms of discounts on port fees.
In this update, you can read more about them!

Port of Harlingen: 5% discount on port dues
Port of Harlingen, located next to the beautiful Wadden area, aims to be the sustainable maritime logistics heart of the Northern Netherlands by 2035. Matching this ambition is the recognition and stimulation of sustainable and safe inland shipping. And that is exactly what Green Award is committed to. We are therefore very pleased that the Port of Harlingen rewards Green Award ships -under certain conditions- with a 5% discount on port fees.

Discount on port fees Wanssum increased to 15%
Good news for ships that visit the port of Wanssum (NL)  and have a Green Award certificate! Municipality of Venray has increased the discount on harbour fees for the port of Wanssum from 10% to 15%. With this incentive, the municipality is rewarding vessels that make an extra effort to reduce emissions and increase safety.

Silver for mts. Kalahari
Mts. Kalahari has again passed the Green Award inspection with flying colours. Even with a silver sheen, as the ship, which sails for Universe Shipping B.V. was tiptop in order! With the Green Award certificate, the Kalahari is eligible for various benefits such as discounts on port fees and various maritime services and products.

Double silver for GEFO
Mts. Van Gogh and mts. Van Dyck of GEFO Shipping Group have successfully passed the 3-yearly Green Award re-inspection. Both ships renewed their Green Award certificates at the ‘silver’ level.

Ships and energy transition: these themes are two important ingredients of the successful recipe of the World Port Days Rotterdam. This is particularly appealing to us as Green Award. Because every day we are busy stimulating and recognizing sustainable shipping in which energy transition plays a leading role.
And if we then also consider that Rotterdam is both the birthplace and location of Green Award, we are extra proud of this maritime event in ‘our’ port city.

We wish visitors, participants and the organisers happy World Port Days and lots of inspiration!

Special thanks to our incentive providers

Green Award for Inland Shipping is built on a solid foundation of, among others, a group of incentive providers. This group consists of over 50 ports, municipalities, suppliers and service providers who have one thing in common: they offer benefits to vessels with a Green Award certificate. These can be discounts on port fees but also on products or services. Or an edge in tenders or even a better berth. This indicates that this group of incentive providers is actively contributing to making inland navigation more sustainable through their support with deeds!
