MarineTraffic joins Green Award scheme to reward excellent ship operation

MarineTraffic, the world’s most trusted AIS vessel tracking service, has joined the Green Award scheme to recognise and reward excellent ship operation.

The Green Award scheme, which is run by the not for profit Green Award Foundation, aims to make excellent ship operation economically attractive, certifying ships that are extra clean and extra safe and enabling them to reap a variety of financial and non-financial benefits provided by incentive providers. An increasing number of ship operators are using intelligence derived from AIS data to analyse, measure and drive a range of efficiencies across their fleets. On average, MarineTraffic receives position transmissions from 140,000 individual vessels per day.
MarineTraffic will provide three key incentives to certified ship-owning companies:

• 10% discount for any online subscription plan, including Enhanced Satellite Tracking for fleets (combining Inmarsat C-polling with AIS data).
• An extended free trial of MarineTraffic ship tracking systems. Certified companies will receive a three-month free trial for plans of their choosing, for an unlimited number of users, with priority support from the Customer Success team.
• Green Award logo prominently displayed on each certified vessel’s and company’s page on

Demitris Memos, managing director at MarineTraffic said:
“MarineTraffic joining the Green Award scheme is a happy marriage of shared aims and values. Being able to analyse trading patterns is key to evaluating the effectiveness of any new product or service on board a ship. By providing top quality commercial data and vessel tracking services to companies and organisations around the world, we aim to play our role in promoting clean and safe ship operations and increasing the transparency and efficiency of shipping.
We are really excited with this opportunity and looking forward to building a long-lasting collaboration with Green Award, as well as the certificate holders, who are in the top tier of the industry.”
Dimitrios Mattheou, Green Award chairman said:
“Monitoring of fleet vessels is a vital element for ship owners, operators and other involved bodies into the shipping industry, providing situational awareness and information on the progress of each voyage. Marine Traffic provides an improved AIS tracking service, through a comprehensive database, having built a global reputation as being the most reliable platform in vessel tracking. Marine Traffic, AIS vessel tracking service, has created a daydream wish come true.”
Examples of financial benefits available to Green Award vessels include a considerable reduction on port dues at participating terminals in Belgium, Canada, Germany, Gibraltar, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Sultanate of Oman, New Zealand, Portugal and South Africa. A range of savings are also provided by incentive providers including governments and private companies such as MarineTraffic.
The Green Award certification procedure is carried out by the Bureau Green Award, the executive body of the independent Green Award Foundation. The certification procedure consists of a company office audit and an audit of each individual ship applying for certification. Fully repeated every three years and annually verified, the audit assessment focuses on crew, operational, environmental and managerial elements.
The Green Award scheme is open to oil tankers, chemical tankers and dry bulk carriers, LNG and LPG carriers, containerships and inland navigation vessels.
Green Award certified companies will not only benefit from discounted access to data gleaned from MarineTraffic very extensive AIS network, but also have their vessel’s Green Award status displayed to a multitude of commercial users. A vessel’s green and safety credentials are already of great interest to brokers and charterers worldwide and this interest will only continue to grow.
